I usually agree with most things you say, but I think you are oversimplifying a little here:

>>It is no longer the developers that drive the software market, but rather the requirements that the market has come to expect from those employing the developers that drive the software market!

The developers make the market. They made Microsoft Windows. Where would Microsoft Windows be today if only Microsoft wrote applications for it from the word go? (hint subtract all of the Windows products Microsoft acquired rather than wrote).

>> Microsoft is betting heavily on the developers to jump into their camp, but the fact is developers are irrlevant and no longer a main factor when it comes to choosing the technology! Therefore even if software developers prefer the painful Microsoft technology for whatever reason, they can not utilize that technology because their perspective employers are looking to penetrate a broader consumer market than the traditional PC-only users.

C++ developers are already in the Microsoft camp, and hate it. The pain of dealing with the numerous versions of Microsoft Windows, and the underlying lack of design of Win32 are a huge sink of resources, and most developers cannot wait to escape into a more productive environment.

IMO Java represents the last chance to have a truly enjoyable career in software development.
