You don't really record, you convert or encode. And all conversion takes place in you computer and NOT the Rio. The Rio is just Ram for which you can download your mp3 files to. But you bring up an interesting point. Because they're coming out with simple computers to just do simple things and surf the internet. But these simple computers are not going to cut it when it comes to MP3. IMO
