We will all pay the price tomorrow.

There were crazy, heightened expectations floating all around
the net about the earnings estimate of this one stock, more
than those of any other stock I can recall. Some fools
suggested earnings as high as 15-16 cents. This is more than
50% off the professionals' estimates. For a while it looked
like anybody who could do a little algebra was taking a shot
at his own estimate. Do these people seriously think that the
5 or so analysts who cover this stock and come up with
estimates based on first hand conversations with the senior
management would be so far off their calculations that they
would have to rely on armchair amateurs who do this to kill time?

As one writer pointed out, Joe Kernan on CNBC said the figure
was much lower than pointed out on some online forums. This is
a plain fact, and one cannot be mad at Kernan for stating what
was on everyone's mind. Let's be honest with ourselves. Iomega
is essentially an "Internet stock", propelled by a lot of talk and
hype on a lot of internet forums, a medium that Wall Street
is clearly unfamiliar and uncomfortable with. So no matter what
Iomega really makes, its salient feature will always remain
its extraordinary online following. Infact, the DBC realtime
news service was categorizing Iomega as an Internet stock
until recently when I pointed out the mistake to the list
maintainer. So to completely disassociate the online comments
about the stock would be dishonest and wrong. The stock has and
will be influenced by what is said about it online, just as
in any other medium. Let us learn a lesson from this and
not make wild, speculative and uninformed statements about
it, especially when their source is just wishful thinking.

Regards,
Kunal
