Although the last time I went there, it took four hours each way thanks to the snowy roads and the mandatory tire chains.

You've made my point. That "two hours to the mountains" is just some Chamber of Commerce PR that might have been true in the 1930s when there was less cars and chains weren't required. Maybe.

But what's true is you can swim and ski in the same day although the swimming is not that pleasant in January.
