The IBC Offers A Look at Overseas Broadcast Possibilities

(October 15) Amsterdam -- The annual IBC convention in September highlighted a number of new and enhanced product offerings from a wide range of equipment manufacturers, but mostly it signaled Europe's acknowledgment that interactive services and the World Wide Web are crucial pieces to the digital television puzzle.

As a group, broadcasters operating in the UK and Europe seem to be moving forward with their transition to digital service, although most have little faith in high definition television as a sound business model. Virtually every broadcaster we spoke to explained that overseas consumers want more functionality out of their TVs, not more lines of resolution. To this end, the show floor booths of companies that offered interactive and datacasting capabilities--such as OpenTV, Divicom and NDS--proved very popular with attendees.
