That was really a bad law.

The Federal Family Medical Leave Act provides for unpaid leave. There is a California statute, other than the
one providing for paid leave, that applies to even smaller
employees. It's similar, but not identical, to the FMLA.

Although the leave under the latter is not paid leave, it's
still expensive to comply.
