nikkeibp.asiabiztech.com China's Datang Telecom Masters CDMA Wireless Technology May 4, 2000 (BEIJING) -- Datang Telecom Technology Corp. said that it has mastered the core know-how of the code division multiple access (CDMA) wireless system. Specifically, Datang said it has developed the IS-95CDMA mobile telecom system, the first of its kind with Chinese intellectual property rights, according to a report in the Science and Technology Daily. Experts here said the CDMA system is based on the second generation of mobile telecom technology and that it features a bigger system capacity, high-quality communication services and lower costs associated with network building. Development of the CDMA system is listed as one of the state's major high-tech research projects between 1996 and 2000. Datang Telecom and a state mobile telecom lab attached to Dongnan University established a joint development center for their CDMA research program. Chinese Premier Zhu Rongji has said that the nation would continue to utilize U.S.-made CDMA systems while still using GSM technology. He made the remarks at a press conference held at the end of the Third Session of the Ninth National People's Congress in March. In a related development, Datang Telecom in March exported 3 million newly developed integrated circuit (IC) telephone card microchips to the European market. That shipment comprised China's first batch of IC phonecard chips with intellectual property rights exported to Europe. (Xinhua News Agency)
