how would this work? Couldn't I just say, "I already sold it to this guy named Alan Smithee" or something?

What I see as a precursor to confiscation is some sort of recordkeeping requirement for gold transfers. A gold tax would allow for such recordkeeping and get a slice of the gold pie to boot.

But c'mon a _gold_ tax? That's nutty! No one would ever go for that!
