From Computers and Communications towards Appliances and Communications

The shot gun marriage of computer and communications didn't go beyond the talk. Computer business passes the low costs to consumers. Communications don't. Hence no marriage. One stage have been bypassed -well, we can say that dial up is sort of computer and communications integration if you want- the next is about to start.

Now is Appliances and Communications. Sony - Ericsson. Your fridge having an IP address. You car having more processing power than one of those "supercomputers" the US wanted to hog a few years back. Multimedia Messaging System marrying your handycam and so on.

I am watching it very closely.

Every time the Japanese has to step in. Hadn't they not stepped in carmaking, we would be here having ABS only in Mercedes and Ferraris and disk brakes only in the front wheels.

But the Japanese, true to their traditions have stepped in since they are the ones that would mostly benefit from Appliances and Communications.

From NTT push to build a pool of patents to make 3G go ahead. From DoCoMo tired of seeing WAP not happening went ahead with i-mode. And now their push into make Europe build i-mode to kick start 3G.

Had 3G been left for the Nokias, Ericssons and Siemens of this world -I even don't include that wireless desert which is the US companies- 3G would end up being France Minitel with color running over ISDN.

But the Japanese stepped in. And they have already nailed to their toilets' doors the following industries once dominated by western firms: Cameras, photocopiers, motorcycles, optics, video games, and guess what else? Appliances. You know what is going to happen next
