Islamism has for years provided a coherent narrative about what ails Muslim societies and where the cure lies

If you read about the history of Islam, you notice that every time during times af hardship and confusion they tend to "go back to the basics". That is natural, we all do that. In their case, it means reexamining the life of the original Ummah, the lives of the Prophet and his friends.... In other words, it means going back to fundamentalist Islam. There is no surprise that Islamists are winning elections, and will continue to do so.

Edit -- note that "coherent narrative" does not necessarily mean that it is the correct one.
