Terayon and Broadcom Selectedby CableLabs to Author Advanced Cable Modem Standard Specification

November 24, 1998 07:59 AM
SANTA CLARA, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Nov. 24, 1998--Cable Television Laboratories, Inc. (CableLabs(R)) has selected Terayon Communication Systems TERN and Broadcom Corporation BRCM to author a detailed technical specification on next-generation physical layer technology for integration into the Data Over Cable Service Interface Specification (DOCSIS).

The specification will be based on Terayon's S-CDMA (Synchronous Code Division Multiple Access) technology and Broadcom's Advanced Frequency Agile TDMA (Time Division Multiple Access) technology. The specification will be authored by Terayon and Broadcom, in conjunction with CableLabs and under their auspices.

The next-generation physical layer is an important extension for DOCSIS because the robustness of these types of technologies will enable more cable systems to deliver higher speed two-way cable services and allow cable companies to increase the data capacity of their networks. By including an advanced physical layer to DOCSIS, creating the DOCSIS 1.2 specification, the cable industry will add more advanced technologies to the modem specification. The 1.2 technology will co-exist with earlier iterations of DOCSIS technology.

Terayon CEO Zaki Rakib stated, "We view Terayon's selection as an affirmation of the value of the S-CDMA technology to the cable industry. We look forward to the opportunity to provide resources and expertise to this important collaborative effort. We believe that the entire cable industry worldwide will reap benefits from this new level of standardization.

"The inclusion of S-CDMA as part of the cable industry standards will help to drive the growth of the broadband data market. As our technology becomes integrated into the industry standards, Terayon is well positioned to participate in this expanded market opportunity. The combination of increased market footprint, time-to-market, cost-effective implementation, and our association as the inventor of S-CDMA technology will lead to continued strong branding power for Terayon in the market."

Dave Fellows, Chairman of the DOCSIS Certification Board, commented, "By adding an advanced physical layer to DOCSIS, we will maximize the upstream channel capacity and extend the range of cable plant conditions that can be served by DOCSIS-compatible modems." Added Fellows, who also is interim Chief Technology Officer of the Road Runner high-speed data delivery service, "This will expand the market that can be served by DOCSIS-compatible products."

Wilt Hildenbrand, Senior Vice President, Technology and Engineering for Cablevision Systems Corp., stated, "S-CDMA achieves more reliability and more capacity for upstream data transmission. The result of this is more channel availability, which is a critical element for carrying data and voice services. Cablevision Systems and the entire industry will benefit from the inclusion of S-CDMA technology in the DOCSIS standard."

Bob Roseman, TCA's Vice President of Business Development, added, "As we deploy Terayon cable modems across our systems, the inclusion of S-CDMA in the DOCSIS specifications gives us continued confidence in the future of S-CDMA and its value to the cable industry as a whole."

Richard Rexroat, Vice President of Engineering for TCI International (TINTA), stated, "The addition of Terayon's S-CDMA technology to DOCSIS 1.2 makes the DOCSIS standards more attractive to the international broadband access market. Our experience is that S-CDMA provides the most robust solution for the demanding plant topologies and infrastructures in Japan. This technology approach enables significant savings in up-front costs, while combining features to support advanced services such as IP telephony on the same technology platform."

Sudhir Ispahani, Chief Technology Officer of Chello Broadband N.V., a wholly owned subsidiary of UPC (United Pan-Europe Communications), added, "The decision to incorporate Terayon's technology in the DOCSIS cable modem standards is a significant step, which will clearly make DOCSIS-based products more appealing to the wide range of cable systems that exist across the European market."

Terayon's cable modem systems deliver 14 megabit per second, two-way performance, even in demanding system environments. This allows cable operators to deploy data services faster and more cost-effectively over their cable systems. Terayon's systems are based on S-CDMA (Synchronous Code Division Multiple Access) technology, which provides robust performance over a broad range of cable plant conditions.

S-CDMA-based systems provide reliable service over any type of cable plant--from noisy all-coaxial systems to fiber-upgraded HFC (hybrid fiber/coax) systems. In addition, Terayon's systems incorporate sophisticated Quality of Service capabilities, allowing precise control of the available bandwidth. This allows cable operators to offer tiered services -- from residential Internet access to business services for data and telephony.

Terayon Communication Systems provides cable operators with reliable, high-capacity cable modem systems that support a full range of broadband services. The Company, based in Santa Clara, California, USA, has sales and support offices worldwide, and is traded on the Nasdaq National Market under the symbol TERN.
