So the only surprise to SEG, QNTM and WDC must have been the timing of IBM's announcement. I'm certain that these 3 have contingency plans how to deal with the new technology. It is really no different than the introduction of the MR head in IBM's drives in 1991. It took until now for thin film inductive heads to come close to being phased out. At first, yield for GMR heads will be poor. This alone will limit the rate of introduction. Yes, this is a positive development. Without breakthroughs like this, the only way to add data capacity to drives would be to add heads and disks at great expense. As long as IBM licenses the technology, I think we should take this in stride and even welcome it. GM
