What the Republicans fail to understand is what Democrats failed to understand in the past. The Presidential vote is controlled by the moderates.
The hardliners of both parties will always vote for their candidate (unless there is a 'spoiler' in their midst, such as Nader or Buchanan). So, they need to appeal to the moderate voters, because they're already guaranteed at least their 25% hardline support.
Bush has completely failed in this regard. Rove and others once again assume that moderates are stupid, and that the same half truths and misdirections that worked on the party faithful and the scared post 9/11 crowd will work today. They won't.
People want results. The results that Bush has given us are broken promises, deficits, environmental negligence, economic disaster, international embarrassment, an Iraqi quagmire, a lack of focus on the REAL war on terror, joblessness, poverty, intelligence failures, government secrecy, and lack of accountability.
