Speaking of which, JFK's first televised debate with Nixon shows the power of making both a visual as well as audio impression. The radio audience gave the debate to Nixon, but the TV audience gave it to Kennedy.

The TV audience was influenced by the masterful slanted editing of Don Hewitt, later of 60 minutes. Should have been a lesson for all the Republicans to avoid being drawn into the debates in an enemy camp.
