Leading Notebook Peripheral Manufacturer Teams with Iomega to Deliver Preferred Storage Solution to Worldwide Notebook OEM's, Japanese Retail Marketplace and Burgeoning "Beyond-PC" Applications
Iomega Corporation today announced the signing of a contract between Iomega and the Storage Device
Division of Toshiba Corporation granting full licensing rights to Toshiba to redesign, manufacture and market slimline internal Zip drives and external PCMCIA-connected Zip solutions. Toshiba plans to manufacture and market slimline Zip drives to OEM notebook manufacturers worldwide and into the growing beyond-PC applications market.
As part of the contract, Toshiba will also be engineering and manufacturing slimline Zip drives for Iomega to be included in a substantial portion of Iomega branded notebook OEM and future smaller form factor retail Zip drives. Toshiba expects to bring all of these solutions to market in 1999.
"Toshiba is one of the leading manufacturers of notebook peripheral drives," said Edward D. Briscoe, president, personal storage division, Iomega Corporation. "Their decision to manufacture and market slimline Zip drives is a powerful endorsement of Iomega's Zip drive technology and market momentum. With this agreement, we form a pivotal marketing and manufacturing alliance with Toshiba that can deliver innovative and low-cost Zip solutions for years to come."
To date, Iomega's slimline Zip drive has almost exclusively been used for notebook applications. Now, the slimline Zip drive will become available for other external and integrated PC applications beyond notebooks, as well as beyond traditional PC applications like stand-alone set-top boxes, game systems, and audio and medical devices, that can benefit from a smaller profile Zip drive.
"Taking into account the mass market appeal of the Zip drive to both the end user and OEM, and after careful evaluation of Zip drive technology compared to other high-capacity storage technologies, the Zip drive licensing agreement is the next logical step to strengthen our worldwide product offerings for today and tomorrow," said a Toshiba spokesperson.
With more than 100 million Zip SuperFloppy disks and 19 million Zip drives shipped, Zip drive users can rely on having access to their important information virtually anytime, anywhere. Iomega Zip drives can be found as; a standard or optional feature in PC models from all leading desktop OEMs and from many notebook PC manufacturers.
