Much of the Chechen struggle is religious

Actually, it is not. Do take a minute to take a look at the history of their struggle, and the history of the region.

I think the author should tell us whether every entity claiming right to national status, should be granted a chunk of geography out the country they currently live in?

Which nation are you referring to? If you mean the Chechens, I suggest you take a look at their history - they were a country before Russian army invaded them. Now they want to be a country again. This is hardly a group of bandits "claiming right to national status" to which Russia should or should not "grant a chunk of geography out of the country they currently live in".

Religion is just something that grew stronger as the resistance progressed - something that was theirs and not Russian. Besides, their resistance is being supported by Muslim organizations around the world and that is also affecting a move towards the religious. However, the struggle is not religious in essence. It is incorrect to say "much of the Chechen struggle is religious".

The Turks certainly don't favor such a goal since it would set the precedent for having to sacrifice land for a Kurdish state..

Of course they don't. It is a different case, though.
