09:51 05/06/2002 Islamic Jihad claims responsibility for bus bombing

By Jalal Bana, Ha'aretz Correspondent and agencies

The military wing of the Islamic Jihad organization claimed responsibility Wednesday for the bus bombing that killed at least 16 people and wounded scores at a highway junction near the northern town of Afula.

A car packed with explosives blew up next to the bus, which was crowded with rush-hour commuters.

The assailant is from the area of Jenin in the West Bank, members of Islamic Jihad's military wing said. The name of the attacker would not be released for fear of Israeli reprisals against the family, the militants said.

The claim of responsibility was aired by Al Manar Television, operated by the Lebanese Hezbollah guerrilla organization.

"The Jerusalem Brigades, the military wing of Islamic Jihad, announced its responsibility for this...operation in a phone call to Al Manar," the station reported.

Islamic Jihad is a relatively small group that has carried out a number of suicide bombings in Israel in recent months. The group's stronghold is the town of Jenin and the adjacent refugee camp, scene of the deadliest fighting during Israel's recent military offensive.

Report: IDF kills Palestinian near Gaza-area kibbutz

IDF troops patrolling the border with the Gaza Strip Wednesday shot dead a suspected Palestinian militant who was armed with large knives, Israel Radio reported.

It said the troops intercepted the man, along with a second suspected militant, crouching as the two approached the border fence near Kibbutz Nahal Oz in the western Negev.

The force then opened fire, killing one of the men. The other escaped, and it was not known if he was hit.
