A lot of government regulation, I hate to say it, is a direct response to serious abuses in the past; this is especially true of environmental and occupational health regulation. The key to making it work, IMO, is not to toss the concept of regulation, but to trim out the core regulations that make sense from the mass of bullshit that doesn't, and make the rules clear, simple, and enforceable.

Easier said than done, but I wish they'd at least try.
