The one I liked was no change or no alert color for "0" or "(0)", and whatever color for 1 or more.

Or: "0" for none and "(nn)" for 1 or more works for me.

Or: If MAIL is bold, then make the counter regular if "0" and bold if 1 or more. In this case, you could drop the parentheses.
