I suppose I may be picking nits to close and am willing to concede the point, if you let me skip the prayer.

By definition an insurgent is one who revolts and fights against civil authority. The term generally applies to natives of the country owning the civil authority.

Since there has been no comprehensive Iraqi civil authority for sometime now, and we are fighting lots of foreigners as well, I don't view this as a counterinsurgency. I can however see how you might.

I doubt you would (nor would I) classify the fight against al qaeda in America as a counterinsurgency.
