Sam - people who argue in favor of a stronger IS-95 commitment from Nokia at this stage are effectively ignoring the profit margin issue. As we see from Motorola - margins are crucial at this point. Margin worries caused SSB to lower their Mot target price from 200 to 120.

Nokia's reluctance to place too much emphasis on IS-95 at this point is grounded in the goal of maximizing profits; not maximizing market share. So people who want to see aggressive CDMA phone line-up right now should invest in Motorola and Audiovox.

People who are more interested in profit growth should be content with Nokia. Whining endlessly about IS-95 strategy is absurd when you compare Nokia's performance to Motorola and Audiovox.

Nokia's management is going to decide when to enter the IS-95 market in a big way. People who question the management judgement on this topic better have some damn good arguments to argue their point. Nokia management has earned a measure of trust when it comes to timing market entries.

I don't want this stock to be white hot. I want it to evade the slaughter that has hit Motorola, Lucent, Microsoft and Qualcomm. That's tough enough under the circumstances. We may end up with a year where 20% annual performance is very good. Let's just downshift here and forget about the triple digit returns - that was last century.
