Sure he did- working 9-3 and dressing up for dinners must be great. As an ideological figurehead for the conservative party no one could have been better. Perhaps intelligent Presidents are bad- Jimmy Carter had to be one of the smartest we've had, but he couldn't delegate, and his deep ethical thinking got us into some real problems (imo). Perhaps an untroubled shallow public speaker is the best representative for an electorate that can't think more than a few years ahead, has a hard time looking further than their pocketbooks, and has little real compassion on a grand scale. Sure, people can send money to people in news stories- tragedies thrust into the gaping maw of the public, but as for a real consciousness of world pain, or would inequalities, world tragedies and despair, it isn't there. Our compassion is facile and limited by our desire for a QUICK solution. Sometimes there are long difficult solutions- and we are not the kind of electorate to tolerate that. So our politician's make stupid expedient decisions to appease us. And whether I laugh at dark humor or not, I have compassion for others- and I actually try to see a bigger perspective than the hidebound one presented to me by the mainstream American press, or the politicians who never represent me.

So we get the government we deserve. The government that will tell us what we want to hear, and will not push us to the actions that may need to be taken to secure our future.
