Agreed about the sweet spot, but for those other than Seagate, it's currently done with drives designed for 3 to 4 platters which are de-populated to one or two.

My point: You can't built a de-populated 2 platter design as cheaply as a drive designed for 2 platters. (Different platform motor, HGA/HSA, head voice coil etc, etc for two disks versus one for 4).
