-- N.Korea pulls out of NPT,not to produce nuclear arms --

SEOUL, Jan 10 (Reuters) - North Korea's official news agency
said on Friday the communist country was pulling out of the
nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty but had no intention of
developing nuclear weapons.
"The government of the Democratic People's Republic of Korea
in a statement today declared its withdrawal from the nuclear
Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT) and its total freedom from the
binding force of the safeguards accord with the International
Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA)," said the KCNA news agency.
The withdrawal was immediate, it said.
"Though we pull out of the NPT, we have no intention to
produce nuclear weapons and our nuclear activities at this
stage will be confined only to peaceful purposes such as the
production of electricity," it said.
The move follows an ultimatum from the Vienna-based IAEA, the
United Nations nuclear watchdog, on Monday calling on North Korea
to readmit nuclear inspectors whom Pyongyang expelled last month.
The inspectors were monitoring a nuclear reactor suspected of
producing plutonium for nuclear weapons.
