I think corporations while necessary, cannot be allowed free rein. Environmental concerns are not likely to be a top priority for corporations, yet they I think they msut be for our planet. It is unfair, but we should try to stop the entire world from developing at the rate the West did - with the same horrendous ecological carnage. Surely you are aware of the damage the gold mining interests are doing in South America. And the Fishing corporations world wide are depleting whole species to near extinction. You may talk about alarmists- but I remember when Silent Spring came out. It was necessary. If it had not come out we might have lost bird and butterfly species that are alive today (and many other kinds of beneficial insects). Now we have that kind of threat worldwide- and mostly in the developing world. We have exported our ecological holocaust (imo) just as we have exported our need for cheap labor.

We need to stop companies exporting chemicals to the Third world which we do not allow here. The world needs to get its collective ass together and form some UN for pollution problems that actually works. These problems require world wide organization- any one country taking them on will of course feel put upon- which is why the third world is pissed at us for suggesting they be more careful in their economical development than we were in ours. The West will have to give something major to the developing nations if it expects their cooperation. IMO it is worth finding a solution. But then I like clean air and water. I dislike the idea of whole species disappearing (and not just from a practical perspective- although that is surely one dimension), and I wonder what my children will think of me if I do not try to make the world a better place for them- as far as my comprehension allows me to understand and imagine a better world.
