Is the market being manipulated (in the short term) by big traders, investment houses, and the Fed or is it legit?

Over the last few years I have noticed a number of suspicious trading patterns (specifically in the S&P500) that are most likely futures and options related. They usually occur in options expiration week. There have also been rumors and articles in mainstream newspapers about possible intervention in the market by the Fed not through liquidity injection but through direct purchases of futures. (causing the market to reverse in the middle of a meltdown) Of course there is no proof of such action, but that does not mean it didn't happen either. I am happy to report that I am not the only one who thinks this market is somewhat suspicious. This observer has more than logic, intuition, common sense etc... to support the claim.
