I think the reason for the war was that the appearance was that Saddam was not going to stop with just Kuwait. He was going for Saudia Arabia next. He had at least 10 division massed on the border with Saudia Arabia ready to hit it next. The first thing the US did was position troops to defend Saudia Arabia.
