In the late 80's in Stuttgart a company would print out its data and would load them up in a pick up and the pick up would deliver across the region. It was cheaper than download the data electronically via a leased line from the Deutsche Bundespost (DBP)

This, because -differently thant the US which had MCI- no licences were available for anyone but the DBP to build a microwave link.

Here in Brazil, also in the late 80's- banks would set up a VSAT station for 64Kbit/s at that time. In Bangalore, India, Texas Instruments would have its own satellite ground station to relay data to the US.

But we know that today, short distance data transfers are competitive with the bandwidth of the pick up truck. Long distance will follow.

What I see today happening with goods will happen with data. If you look what A.T. Kearney and Procura Digital are doing. See, today the foreign enterprises here in Brazil, have consultants looking that they are not shafted.

But if you buy stuff in a style that ProcuraDigital does, there's no need to have consultants looking over your interests when you buy stuff. You just ask for bids.

If you wanted to know why you need to have consultants looking after your procurement just remember the $5.000 coffee machine and the $7.000 toilet seat the DoD was buying back in the 80's. Or just read Frank's posting s about the twisted pair cartel.

What the do.com did was test the water. Now the big boys take it over and use that model to make business.

Data is going to follow procurement. It has to be available whenver you want, wherever you want and that -perhaps- can't wait for the B747.
