Japan Outlines Supplementary Budget Plan For Telecom

OSAKA, JAPAN, 1998 MAY 13 (NB) -- By Martyn Williams,
Newsbytes. Japan's Ministry of Posts and Telecommunications (MPT)
has outlined its spending plans for 110 billion yen ($821.2 million) in supplementary budget spending.

Almost half of the total spending in info-communications will be on
development of a gigabit network for research and development
purposes. The 51 billion yen ($380.7 million) nationwide network will
be open to use by universities, research institutes and will include development work on ATM (asynchronous transfer mode) switching at ten locations
and work on facilities for shared research
study at three locations.

A further 35 billion yen ($261.3 million) will be spent on establishment of research and development facilities for promoting digital terrestrial broadcasting.

The MPT said it plans to spend 5.9 billion yen ($44.1 million) on helping to remove the disparity between telecommunications services available in different areas. Within this project is a 3.4 billion
yen ($25.4 million) plan to promote the construction of steel towers in rural areas to enable the wider use of mobile telephones.

The remaining 18.1 billion yen ($135.1 million) will be used on a variety of projects that includes strategic research projects, expansion of the multimedia town scheme and more.
