Sun Microsystems has reported some new SFS results that are, in my
interpretation, absolutely horrendous.

They have a 4-processor system with 8 GB (giga-bytes) of memory with
6 GB of NVRAM (256MB per StorEdge controller), using 13 StorEdge
controllers and 222 disks. The are using RAID5, so this is the
first time I believe they have reported with RAID, "ON". The
maximum throughput was 13605 operations with a response time
of 14.8 milliseconds.

See: specbench.org

For comparison, the Network Appliance single-processor system with
3 GB of memory, 128 MB of NVRAM, using 2 disk controllers and 38
disks reports a maximum throughput of 15235 operations with a
response time of 3.6 milliseconds.

An ideal outcome for the SFS benchmark is a high throughput or
operation count with a very low response time meaning the system
can handle a high number of requests and respond quickly to
those requests.

In this comparison, NTAP has 4 times better response time with
a higher number of operations at a much cheaper cost of the
configuration.

I think the most important thing to take from these SFS benchmarks
is a feeling for the competitive advantage that one company might
have over another with their technology. It seems clear to me
that NTAP has proven itself to have superior technology to both
Compaq, EMC and Sun's recently announced products.

If I am missing anything, feel free to correct any mistakes but
I encourage everyone to look at the raw data and draw their
own conclusions.
