China Unicom Signs CDMA Contracts In Victory for Patent-Holder Qualcomm

HONG KONG -- In a long-awaited victory for U.S.-based Qualcomm Inc., China Unicom Group said it signed contracts Tuesday to purchase about $1.5 billion in code division multiple access wireless network equipment from vendors in North America, Europe and Asia.

Vendors, however, put the value of the contracts at about US$2 billion

Lucent Technologies Inc. of the U.S. said it was awarded the largest of the contracts, at more than $400 million, with Motorola in second place, followed by Nortel Networks Inc.., Sweden's Telefon AB L.M. Ericsson, and Chinese manufacturers. Samsung of South Korea was also believed to have been awarded a contract.

A Motorola executive in Beijing confirmed the company had won a large contract and said it would announce details later in the day. Ericsson said it announced its deal was worth $200 million. Other firms couldn't be reached immediately for comment. snip....
