''This is progress. They're not where they need to be yet but they're going in the right direction,'' said Jim Porter, president of market research firm Disk/Trend in Mountain View, Calif.

''This was a good quarter and we showed good growth in gross margins,'' said Woody Munroy, a Seagate spokesman.

The company finished the quarter, which ended Oct. 2, with about $1.8 billion in cash, he said.

Seagate's gross margin widened to 20.7 percent from 15.6 percent in the year-ago period.

''I don't expect Seagate to start looking much better until 1999,'' said Porter.
