related news.. "Cabletron To Debut ATM Switch
Line
(06/01/98; 4:31 p.m. ET)
By Monua Janah, InformationWeek

Cabletron Systems is expected to introduce this week
an ATM switch line that includes a high-end LAN
device called the SmartSwitch 9500, sources said. This
move will follow price cuts last week on the GigaSwitch
ATM that was inherited in the acquisition of Digital
Equipment's networking unit last year. The Rochester,
N.H., company also announced plans to enhance the
GigaSwitch line.

The price of 622-megabit-per-second line cards for the
GigaSwitch ATM that support the multimode fiber
version was reduced by more than one-third to $9,675.
The single-mode fiber version's price was slashed more
than 40 percent, to $11,495.

A firmware upgrade slated for this month will improve
the GigaSwitch's ability to handle WAN traffic and to
manage the switch via a Web browser. In September, a
622-Mbps line card with full redundancy will ship and
an upgrade will support the Private
Network-to-Network Interface, an industry standard
for switch-routing that allows interoperability with other
vendors' products.
