Hello Paul,

Here is a little data from Industry Pulse (VLSI Research) showing
the trend of Terabits and the Price per Bit:

Terabits: Price per Bit:
(Tb) (m$)
NOV 1319.9 3.213
DEC 1533.5 2.730
JAN 1356.3 2.641
FEB 1361.5 2.452
MAR 1735.3 1.819
APR 1521.1 1.556
MAY 1663.5 1.214
JUNE 1754.4 0.921
JULY 1710.6 0.821
AUG 1982.5 0.719

As you have noted, bit volumes are growing quite nicely even
though the price per bit has collapsed. We all know that there
are lots reasons why this has happened. We could spend days
discussing issues like over capacity and memory use inside
personal computers.

The trend for total semiconductor UNIT shipments is relatively
stable when plotted alongside the DOLLAR VALUE of IC shipments
and Orders. In my opinion, this chart also says something about
the efficiency of today's semiconductor fab.

Just for kicks, here is a chart that plots memory prices along
a trendline depicting Moore's Law:

I agree with you that this tends to be unfairly depicted by the
media. I have placed this post on the thread for that very reason.
