Workplace Shooter's Mother Requests Worker's Comp

Woman Says Son, Who Killed 3 In Missouri, Died On Company Time

JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. -- Her son killed three co-workers at a Missouri factory over the summer, then opened fire on police before taking his own life.

But Jonathon Russell's mother has filed for worker's compensation, pointing out that her son died on company time.

The woman says her 25-year-old son helped support her, adding that she shouldn't have to pay for his actions.

Russell apparently punched his time card at the Modine Manufacturing Company in Missouri in July, before fatally shooting three co-workers and wounding five others. He then drove to a police station, where he eventually killed himself.

On the standardized claim form, his mother wrote that Russell suffered "death by gunfire" -- but gave no further details.

The company has rejected the death-benefits claim, saying he died of a self-inflicted wound off the job site. The state workers' compensation division will have the final say.
