One major problem of focus and understanding is that 3G seems to be discussed in the context of GSM land. Therefore the stories about slow and expensive roll out.

You know, I see the same thing. GSM has the mindshare and everything else is either thought of in terms of it or not thought of seriously at all. This is much like Windows AD and Novell's NDS. While there are people who understand NDS and its capabilities, they are largely ignored by the press and everything is thought of from a Windows perspective.

The GSM PR machine is extremely strong and will fight tooth and nail for every last person's mental framework. Q certainly has an uphill battle on its hands. After all, GSM vendors have managed to convince thousands who should know better that W-CDMA is evolving from GSM. If they can do that they can do almost anything.

Since in the end every GSM system has agreed to adopt some flavor of CDMA, I'm content at a minimum to win the money wars.
