"Demolition of Osama bin Laden compound underway

Pakistan's security forces have begun tearing down Osama bin Laden's secret hideway to prevent it becoming a shrine to Islamic extremists as the anniversary of his death approaches."

In an operation as secretive as the US raid that killed him in May last year, bulldozers and diggers arrived under cover of darkness on Saturday night to begin the process of flattening the three-storey villa.

Publicly, officials refused comment on such a sensitive demolition.

Privately, however, a senior security officer told The Daily Telegraph that work had begun to stop the hideout in the military town of Abbottabad attracting al-Qaeda supporters.

"We don't want somewhere where people can congregate or turn it into a shrine," he said. "It's time to move on and leave this behind."

The mechanical diggers have their work cut out. After clawing and shovelling their way through the night and morning, the third storey of Osama bin Laden's final hideaway still stood out above Abbottabad's low-level skyline yesterday afternoon.
