Japan's KDDI plans fast mobile phone data service
TOKYO, Oct 1 (Reuters) - New Japanese telecoms giant KDDI plans to launch the world's fastest mobile phone-based data service, Japanese media reported on Sunday.
The service, to be launched in 2002, will feature an average speed of 600 kilobits per second, the Nihon Keizai Shimbun (Nikkei) quoted company sources as saying.
That is the same speed of high-speed Internet connections received by personal computers and should allow the reception of video images of reasonable quality, the Nikkei quoted the sources as saying.
KDDI officially started on Sunday after a three-way merger and becomes the nation's second-largest carrier after Nippon Telegraph and Telephone (NTT) .
KDDI's new service will use high data rate technology developed by U.S. firm Qualcomm Inc (NasdaqNM:QCOM - news) that allows a top speed of 2.4 megabits per second, 75 times faster than regular phone lines, the Nikkei said.
KDDI was formed from Japan's main international telecoms carrier KDD Corp and mobile carriers DDI Corp and IDO Corp -- an unlisted unit of Toyota Motor Corp.
Its position and stakes in wireless, long-distance and local services give it a chance to try to wrest top spot from NTT, the mighty former state monopoly, and shake up the world's second-largest telecoms market.
But analysts say the new firm has a long road ahead because it is burdened by weak growth in cellular subscriptions, the telecom market's hottest item.
