Project Ara, Google's experimental effort to create a smartphone with modular components, will enter a new phase in January. Google will hold two Project Ara developer conferences where it will offer updates on their hardware and software plans.

The first conference will be held for January 14 at Google's main headquarters in Mountain View, California, along with smaller gatherings on the same day in New York City, Buenos Aires, and London. A week later on January 21, Google will hold another Project Ara conference in Singapore, with satellite events in Bangalore, Tokyo, Taipei, and Shanghai.

Google says:

The principal focus of this second Module Developers Conference will be the next major release of the Ara Module Developers Kit (MDK)--version 0.20. We have been hard at work maturing and improving the Ara platform, and we will highlight the major changes and advances in the MDK. We will also demo the latest Ara prototype and developer hardware. We will highlight some ongoing module development efforts from select developers. And we will share early plans for a market pilot in 2015.

That last statement is perhaps the most important one, as Google has not offered any concrete information on when the first Project Ara-based smartphones will go on sale to the general public. Would you be interested in buying a smartphone that could be update just by removing and replacing hardware modules?
