jff...one of the benefits of the internet is the ability as a consumer to give an opinion about a product that they've bought and have their opinion read by other potential consumers of that product.

I spend a lot of time reading user opinions about hardware and software before I make a buying decision.

I think Dell must have made a corporate decision a couple of years back, that since pc's have basically become a commodity, customer service is a good area to cut costs. They probably made a mistake... the sooner word gets around that their highly thought of customer service is a thing of the past the better, as far as an informed consumer is concerned.

I own a Dell and I've never had to use their customer service. I do know that they have quality problems (like any company) with some of their products. For example..their Inspiron 5100 laptop has overheating problems that can cause a spontaneous shutdown. Seems to be a poorly designed cooling system. With diligent cleaning of vents and the use of canned air it can be controlled.

Self education, like the info on this thread, can be the best customer service. Getting to the point where most of the pc maintenance can be done by one's self...if one has the time.

It appears that there aren't a lot of companies left that have decent customer service.
