I believe it matters in that it imparts a sense of morality to a community. Whether you personally believe in a god is of lesser import; it's the morality, ethics, principles, and scruples that matter, and religion does do a pretty good job in that respect.

When a religion lends itself to fatalism (it's God's will, that's the way things are, etc.) or exclusiveness (holier than thou), then it's a negative, IMHO.
