I highly recomment Tony Horwitz's "Blue Latitudes, Boldly Going Where Captain Cook Has Gone Before."

Horwitz alternates between accounts of what Captain Cook encountered on his three voyages with Horwitz's own commentary about his travels to the same places. The book is an excellent read and is a gentle way to get some 18th Century History.
