1. A Perfect Storm
The month of September has all the preriquisites for becoming a brutal time for risk assets. In particular, the European debt crisis remains unresolved, with CDS on euro area banks way above their 2008/9 highs, interbank funding markets becoming ever more strained, the Greek bailout falling apart and a time table for major events that is simply not very market-friendly. Money supply growth in the euro area has begun to shrink in July, which is an ominous sign. In addition, the charts of European stock markets continue to look dismal, if severely oversold.
Includes a look at the tail ends of two historical bear markets that illuminates the problems with trying to pick bottoms and catching falling knives. It can be done, but investors need an iron stomach and a great deal of patience.
