I think McCain's hero designation is well deserved. It came about because he had a chance to be released less than a year after he was captured, because his father was a top admiral and the Vietnamese thought that releasing him would be good PR. But he refused, unless all others captured before him were also released. As a result he endured an extra five years of captivity and very brutal torture. He was near death a number of times during his captivity. His hair turned white while in captivity, and his injuries are apparent even today -- you can tell he is moving pretty stiffly.
