I was just thinking about Marcus Aurelius. He was cool. He believed that evil was a human choice, not something from outside. But he did believe that he was part of something larger than himself.

It must have been very hard for him to be as enlightened as he was in the time and place he lived.

Easier to be enlightened in his shoes (Roman Emperor) than if you were, say, a feudal serf or a millworker during the Industrial Revolution.

By enlightened I mean, knowing that it is wrong to hurt others, knowing that it is good to take a bath, enjoying time by yourself thinking about ideas, wishing you had someone to discuss them with.
