The WaPo decided to scoop David Corn's new book on last summer's debt ceiling negotiations. The NYT plans to run an article too. While the WaPo article shows Obama as a follower of the Yassir Arafat school of negotiating (negotiate in bad faith in order to extract concessions and hurt the other side, but never sign a deal), and incompetent to boot, David Corn is much more admiring:

While the rest of the world would be watching a scuffle over the Bush tax cuts, Obama would be maneuvering on a different field— a field, for better or worse, not widely recognized. He was aiming not for a zero- sum political victory— denying the Republicans their cherished tax breaks for the well- heeled. His goal was a victory he couldn’t otherwise achieve: more federal support for financially stressed- out Americans and hundreds of billions of dollars in another shot of stimulus for the economy. But, he would tell aides, don’t use the s- word. It was as if he had a secret.

Rush was suggesting yesterday that the Congressional Dems can't be too pleased with Obama, who has refused to give them any campaign money, and that the WaPo article is a shot across Obama's bow from aggrieved Congressmen.

The whole thing is more than a little weird. David Corn writes as if the failure of last summer's negotiations was some kind of triumph for Obama. Is this what Obama plans to run on? "Nobody can work with those crazy Republicans!" Really? Good luck with that line, you'll need it.
