In addition, patents require hug sums of money to defend in the Court system with long drawn out proceedings and consuming time and big dollars. Creative Technologies sued several companies for stealing their soundblaster sound card technologies. After several years and many millions of dollars they were justified as correct but awarded no damages. The purloining companies were merely required to adjust their technologies to not infringe on the patent. By then the market share had been lost and the competitors had evolved the state of the art beyond the infringed capability. Patents are not a guarantee.
