Keeping the debt flat while fighting a war is not so bad. If you spend more than you make every single year for decades, would you call the accumulated debt "not so bad"? Or would see yourself as a wretched borrow-and-spend addict utterly dependent on the good graces of your loan sharks? Watching Middle Wast wealth funds buy up chunks of US banks with preferred stock at exorbitant interest rates is a few steps beyond humiliating. It's going to get a lot worse - as far from "not so bad" as you get in my book. Deficits do matter.
