Speaking of member defections, I had tried their flat-rate service when it first came out, then cancelled after one free and one paid month.

I found out last Saturday that AOL had somehow re-started my subscription and had been charging me for two months for AOL service that I didn't authorize. I called AOL immediately, and they said they would credit my card for the two unauthorized months charges.

Anyway, last night I got a call from, you guessed it, AOL. I mentally pictured a large woman on the other end, and it sounded like she was being poked or tickled periodically by a friend on her end, because every once in a while she would laugh for no apparent reason. She offered me another free month subscription to entice me to stay. When I mentioned that I had another access provider and wasn't interested, she moved on to the next potential sucker, er, person on the list.
