Don't take Compaq and HP out of the running

If tomorrow Gates announced a takeover of DEC what would that do to your reasoning? All of the hardware manufacurers sell a variety of OS's and none are afraid to sell an OS that competes with MSFT.

If Compaq took over Novell it would be because they saw it strengthening their server sales and giving them a solid corporate image in the networking market where they sell against many other box companies.

HP's move would be more defensive. They would buy Novell because they could not afford to let it go to someone else. They are the white knight that the insiders would turn to.

Frankly once this company goes into play it could be a bidding contest.

If you look at USRobotics whose stock runup is based on 28.8 modem sales to the consumer market, and IOMega's one product Zip drive, you get some idea of what happens to a company that gets sales momentum behind a product.

Novell certainly has potential with the JAVA/Intranet combination for a knock-out product cycle if they can get their act together.
